OUR HUMBLE Beginnings
Onix Salva was coached by the late, great Colbert Britt for the first time at Malverne High School in 2001. The impact that he had on Coach Salva’s life was one of a father and son. He took a young man (who needed direction and mentorship) and showed him what’s possible. Upon Colbert Britts passing (December 27th 2015), his obituary stated that he was to be predeceased by his son, Onix Salva.
Colbert Britt introduced Onix Salva to Derrick Adkins (another one of his former athletes) that went on to win the 1996 Olympic Gold Medal (Atlanta) in the 400m hurdles representing the United States Of America. Upon retiring, he helped coached Britt mentor Onix Slava and immediately became a brother-like figure to him. Coach Salva’s love and passion for coaching and mentorship comes from honoring his father and coach Colbert Britt, along with his older brother, Derrick Adkins. Coach Salva once asked Colbert Britt when he graduated from Malverne High School "How can I ever repay you?" Colbert Britts reply was "you bring me that piece of paper!” meaning a college degree. Coach Salva kept his promised and got his B.A from Florida International University and M.A at Hofstra University.
Paying it forward is the driving force in the creation of Speed Island.
Coach Salva has coached at Malverne High School for three years where he coached the programs first ever conference title, 400m New York State Champions including 11 all-state athletes. Malverne was also ranked #2 in the county in the 4x400m.
Coach Salva then coached at Huntington High School for three years where they won one Suffolk County Championship, 9 state titles, 8 All American honors on both the men’s and women’s teams and a Nike National Indoor Championship in the mens SMR.
Coach Salva began speed island with having his first athlete, Analisse Batista, who received a full Track and Field scholarship to the University of Arkansas, which is a world recognized collegiate program.
